Walsall Rounders Finals

Congratulations to Cooper & Jordan Primary School from the Streetly Sports Partnership who won the Walsall Rounders Finals and now go forward to represent the borough in the National Schools Primary Rounders Finals in Solihull in the last week of term. I'm sure everyone in Walsall will join me in wishing them good luck.

Shelfield Partnership Rounders Finals

Tuesday 23rd June was the most fantastic day of weather for the Partnership Rounders Finals competition. Shire Oak Science College was a great setting and Miss Eccleston the SSCo provided us with some great leaders from their Leadership Acadmey. As usual for rounders all family's had been well represented in the previous round so it was with sadness we learned that St Peter's of the Walsall Academy family were unable to claim their place after illness wiped out over half of their team. This meant that schools were in two groups with the bottom two in each group playing off for 5th / 6th place, second place in the group playing off for 3rd / 4th place and the group winners playing off for the Partnership trophy and also a place in the Walsall Partnership Rounders Finals.

Congratulations to Brownhills West Primary School who won a very closely fought final against Edgar Stammers Primary School. Brownhills West edging it by just 1/2 a rounder to win 4 1/2 to 4 rounders.

"On Tuesday 23rd June 2009, I attended a rounders tournament for the Shelfield Partnership alongside my schools rounders team-Brownhills West Primary School.
On arrival we were notified that there were 6 teams battling for 1st place. The teams were split into 2 pools. Our pool consisted of St Johns , Caldmore and ourselves. First we competed against St Johns .The coin was tossed - we won the toss. We decided to field first .Unfortunately, we lost as too many no balls were given by our bowler – he was just warming up. The second game we played was against Caldmore. We lost the toss of the coin so Caldmore fielded first .They were excellent at fielding however we still managed to win the game but only by one rounder. Close! After every team had played 2 games, the points were totalled. Out of our pool we had the most rounders therefore we won! In pool 2 Edgar Stammers won which meant that we went head to head with them to find a winning team.

The tension was building as both teams were desperate to win. Butterflies fluttered inside our bellys. Shaking in desperation, we played the finals… Even though we played superbly, we had a feeling we had lost…

All 6 teams gathered for the final presentation. Eventually it was announced that WE were the champions of the day!!! In addition to this, Elliot Lake received Man of the match since he was an outstanding player; he was skilful but also supportive of his team.

Overall the team had a fantastic time which was made even better because we WON!!!!!!" (report by Ryan Steane of Brownhills West Primary School)

Brownhills West were presented with the Partnership Trophy by England Rounders players Eleanor Barnett (Under-14's) and Cindy Harvey (Under-18's)

Walsall Primary Schools Orienteering

This is a new event organised by Walsall Competitions Manager Louise Griffiths who is based at Willenhall Sports Partnership. The event was held over two days at Leamore Park in Blakenhall. Schools were given a time to attend and complete the course. All participants were timed and their control cards checked for the correct points. Each pupil was ranked in order of number of correct controls followed by the fastest times. Top five pupils per school were counted and then schools were ranked. Congratulations to Lindens Primary from the Streetly Partnership who came first, followed by Greenfield Primary from Shelfield and then Christ Church Primary from Streetly.

Partnership Tag Rugby Finals

The turnout for Tag this year has been disappointing. Two families failed to have a single representative enter their competition and the Partnership Finals were contested between only two schools - Caldmore Primary and Mossley. The game was played on an extremely cold, windswept afternoon at Shelfield Community Academy by two evenly matched teams. The scores were neck and neck throughout the entire game and it was fitting that the game ended as a draw with both schools sharing the title of Partnership winners. They both went forward to the Walsall Tag Rugby Finals held at Walsall Rugby Club on Thurday 2nd April.

Year 5/6 Sportshall Athletics Walsall Finals

The finals took place at Shelfield on 27th November at 4pm. The top two schools from each Partnership were competing to decide the Walsall Champions but another prize on offer was to represent their Partnership in the Black Country Sportshall Finals in January.

Shelfield: Blue Coat Juniors, Walsall Wood
Streetly:
Cooper & Jordan, Whetstonefield Primary
Willenhall:
St Josephs', Bentley West

The event was once again a great spectacle and well supported by parents - who were able to watch from the balcony and Shelfield's Young Ambassador's - who ran all the field events and supported the running events.

Sportshall Athletics Partnership Finals

On Thursday 13th November Year 5/6 teams from Greenfield Primary, Edgar Stammers, St Peters' and Blue Coat Juniors met at Shelfield to compete for the title of Sportshall Athletics Partnership Winners.

Pupils were in teams of 9 boys and 9 girls and competed in long jump, triple jump, vertical jump, speed bounce, chest throw and a series of running events.

Sportshall Athletics is a new event for Shelfield and has been run at all three Sports Colleges in the Borough by Louise Griffiths the Competitions Manager for Walsall.

The afternoon started with girls running events and boys field events and swaps each round until all pupils have participated in their chosen events.
Then the scores are collated and the winners announced.

This was the first time many pupils had taken part in the activities but I think everyone present would agree it was a great afternoon of fun and exercise.

At the end of the competition the scores were very close with Blue Coat Juniors winning by just 8 points from St Peter's. Blue Coat will now represent Shelfield in the Walsall Finals at Shelfield on 30th November. Good Luck to them!

6S are Edgar Stammers Judo Champions!

Following half a term of judo sessions from SSCo Mrs Napper Year 6 pupils at Edgar Stammers finished off the coaching with an inter-form judo competition.

Last year Mrs Cox's class were champions and so it was up to Mrs Sarabadu's class to stand up to the challenge. Every pupil present in the lesson had a contest and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to support their class against their rivals!

In the end Mrs Sarabadu's class won out - congratulations to them!

Hopefully some of these children will retain their enthusiasm for the Walsall Schools Judo Championships in April. Last year Stammers pupils did fantastically well - picking up 11 medals.

Sportshall Athletics at Brownhills CTC!

Five classes from the Brownhills and Shire Oak Families took part in the first Sportshall Athletics Event held at Brownhills on Monday 17th November. Teams of 6 boys and 6 girls from each school took part in 6 field events and 2 track events. Scores are put on to a computer which calculates the totals. The competitons scores can be recorded on-line and fed into a national competition.

Winners of the Year 3/4 competition were Brownhills West, a big well done to them and to St.James and Walsall Wood.
They will return to Shire Oak in the summer term for a rematch.

Winners of the Year 5/6 competition were St James'. They go on to represent the Brownhills Family and the Partnership at the Walsall Finals at Shelfield on Thursday 27th November. Congratulations to them and to Walsall Wood who were separated by only 6 points at the end of the competition.

A huge amount of thanks goes to all the Sports Leaders from Brownhills CTC and from Shire Oak who came to help run the competition. Without the dedication of these young people to our sports our activities would not run as efficiently.

We look forward to more exciting competition throughout the year.

Yours in sport,

Mrs.Geldard-Williams (Brownhills CTC) & Miss.Eccleston (Shire Oak)

Walsall High Five Netball Finals

As has been the tradition for a number of years now the three winners from Shelfield, Streetly and Willenhall Sports Partnerships met to decide who were the Walsall High Five Netball Champions.

The teams were: St James (Shelfield), Manor Primary School (Streetly) and Barcroft (Willenhall)

The three schools would all play each other whilst observing strict High Five rules of position rotation.

Unfortunately Manor Primary were unable to attend on the night which left Barcroft and St James in a straightforward contest to decide the Walsall Champions. After the first game of four 5 minute quarters the scores were level. The teams played a second game where St James edged ahead and were able to hold onto their advantage. The games were very even and played with great respect from all players towards their opponents and the officials. It was a great example of school sport and the children and adults all thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Congratulations to both teams!

Shelfield Partnership High Five Netball Finals

This year's High Five Partnership Finals were held at Leamore Park in Blakenhall for the first time. Leamore Park has had a considerable amount of money invested in it's facilities and now boasts a newly surfaced netball / tennis area as well as a pavillion including a kitchen and male & female toilets so it was perfect for our festival.

The seven winners of the family festivals were:

  • Caldmore (Blue Coat Family)
  • St James (Brownhills Family)
  • Edgar Stammers (Rushall Family)
  • St Michaels (Shelfield Family)
  • Castlefort (Shire Oak Family)
  • Abbey (Sneyd Family)
  • St Peter's (Walsall Academy Family)

These teams were divided into two groups. All schools played the other schools in the group with the third and second placed teams in each group playing off for positions and then a final between the two group winners to decide the Partnership Winners.

Congratulations to St James who won in the final.

They will now represent Shelfield in the Walsall Finals to be held on 23rd October at Shelfield Sports College.
