Judo
Since October half-term Edgar Stammers have been treated to almost a term of judo taught by SSCo Mrs Napper who is a 1st Dan in the sport. The pupils were given an hour theory session all about how and why judo started and how to be successful in modern day judo competition. Then the next day we all went to the Walsall Campus of Wolverhampton University which hosts a permanent set of mats and is home to the National Judo Centre of the British Judo Association. The pupils met Dave Elmore - Judo Development Officer - who was taking the session. The session started off with lots of games to get everyone warm, relaxed and used to the environment (including the suits which are so stiff and uncomfortable!) Everyone learned how to do their breakfalls which is the first thing you must learn before you can throw and be thrown. Then Dave taught the first thrown which is called tai otoshi which is Japanese for 'body drop'. In judo all the throws are known by their Japanese names because this is where the sport originates and we try to be respectful to the roots of the sport and also the culture. The pupils then learnt a hold down called mune gatame which means 'chest hold'. The day ended with a game of sumo which was great fun. The following week Mrs Napper came to teach judo to both Year 6 classes on a Wednesday morning. The decision was made to deliver this activity in curriculum time as there were so many pupils who wanted to attend an extra-curricular club there would have been a lot of disappointed children. The pupils learnt very quickly and it has been fantastic to see that every single person has participated and even those who normally find PE very challenging have thoroughly enjoyed taking part. The term ended with a whole morning of judo culminating in an Inter-Form Judo Competition won by one point by Mrs Cox's form. This competition was the first opportunity for the children to fight under competition rules. They did incredibly well and there were some really good throws. The progress of the pupils has been so rapid that the decision has been made to continue this activity until February half-term. |

KILTS Project at Edgar Stammers Following the success of KILTS at Harden last year it has now moved across to Edgar Stammers. "KILTS stands for Kids Improving Learning Through Sport" The concept is to harness the enthusiasm pupils gain through learning a new 'non-traditional' PE activity and to take this across all areas of the curriculum; particularly literacy. Last year pupils at Harden either achieved or exceeded their SAT's predicted grades in English and we would all like to think the KILTS project played a large part in this. The first activity for Edgar Stammers was the Pro-Am Golf Tournament at The Belfry in September. Pupils were able to watch some of the pro's such as Sandy Lyle, Paul McGinley and Colin Montgomerie as they played alongside paying amateurs (proceeds going to charity) |
