Following attendance, each teacher receives a TOPs resource pack for the subject activity.  Teaching Assistance and AOTTs are encouraged to attend whole school sessions, but will not be issued with resource set.

The modules are part of a national programme of PE and school sport professional development.  The Government has invested in this programme to help it achieve the target of pupils taking part in, and enjoying, at least two hours of high quality PE and school sport each week (both within and beyond the curriculum).  This target reflects the potential that high quality PE and school sport has for making a difference to young people and school improvement.

In line with this, the professional development programme aims to:

v      Raise the quality of teaching and learning in PE and school sport by helping schools delivery broad, balanced and inclusive PE and sport

v      Improve schools’ understanding of how they can use high quality PE and sport as a tool for school improvement, particularly in terms of attendance, behaviour management and attainment

v      Improve schools’ understanding of how they can use high quality PE and sport to support healthy lifestyles and physical activity

v      Encourage schools to interpret the PE programme of study in a more innovative way, so that they meet the needs of pupils better and enhance achievement

v      Develop cross-phase continuity and support a whole-school approach to improvement and raising standards

The programme’s success will be judged on the difference it makes to young people and how well it hopes to bring about school improvement.
